What Is Ayurvedic Anorectal and GI Care?

Ayurvedic anorectal and GI care is the specialised branch of Ayurveda that addresses two connected clinical areas: anorectal disorders (piles, anal fissure, anal fistula, pilonidal sinus, rectal prolapse) and chronic gastrointestinal conditions (gastritis, acid reflux, IBS, chronic constipation, ulcerative colitis, fatty liver).

At KSAC Hospitals, an Ayurvedic hospital in Hyderabad, this care is delivered as a structured clinical programme. Each patient undergoes detailed history, classical Ayurvedic assessment and review of modern investigations (endoscopy, colonoscopy, imaging, H. pylori testing) before any care is planned. This evidence based Ayurveda in Hyderabad approach ensures treatment is tailored and coordinated with gastroenterology or colorectal care where indicated.

Ayurvedic anorectal and gastro treatment in Hyderabad at KSAC Hospitals is designed around one central principle: address the underlying digestive fire (Agni), tissue metabolism and dosha imbalance that drive both anorectal and GI disease.

Ksharsutra Therapy: KSAC's Signature Procedure

Classical Ksharsutra therapy is a specialised parasurgical technique that uses a medicated alkaline thread to gradually cut and heal the fistula tract simultaneously. The procedure avoids open surgery, preserves sphincter function and is formally recognised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Ksharsutra treatment in Hyderabad at KSAC Hospitals is led by Chief Physician Dr. Saji D'Souza (BAMS Kerala, MS Rajiv Gandhi, 28+ years) with career-long expertise in fistula-in-ano and complex anorectal presentations.

Common Symptoms Patients Present With

  • Painless or painful bleeding per rectum after passing stool
  • Anal itching, mucus discharge or protrusion suggesting piles
  • Severe pain during and after stool suggesting anal fissure
  • Recurrent perianal discharge or draining sinus suggesting fistula
  • Chronic burning, sour eructations or throat irritation suggesting acid reflux
  • Alternating diarrhoea and constipation with abdominal discomfort suggesting IBS
  • Persistent constipation with hard stools or infrequent bowel movements
  • Elevated liver enzymes or fatty liver on ultrasound

Significant rectal bleeding, unintentional weight loss, or new-onset bowel habit change after age 40-50 requires urgent specialist evaluation first.

Causes and Contributing Factors

  • Chronic constipation, straining and irregular bowel habit driving piles and fissure
  • Low-fibre diet, inadequate hydration and sedentary lifestyle
  • Pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum period predisposing to anorectal conditions
  • H. pylori infection driving chronic gastritis
  • NSAID use, spicy diet, irregular meal timing and chronic stress driving gastritis and reflux
  • Obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome driving fatty liver
  • Gut microbiome disturbances and food intolerances contributing to IBS
  • Vata aggravation driving Bhagandara (fistula) recurrence

Root Cause in Ayurveda

Classical Ayurveda locates the root of anorectal and gastrointestinal disease in Agni (digestive fire) dysfunction and consequent Ama (undigested metabolic residue) formation, with specific dosha involvement determining the presentation.

Specific classical frameworks apply. Arshas (piles) arises primarily from Vata-Kapha dysfunction with Rakta involvement. Parikartika (anal fissure) is Vata-Pitta driven. Bhagandara (fistula) involves Vata-Kapha with local tissue compromise. Amla Pitta (gastritis/GERD) is Pitta-Agni driven. Grahani Roga (IBS) reflects Agni variability with specific sub-types.

This foundational understanding shapes the Ayurveda treatment in Hyderabad approach at KSAC Hospitals. Our senior physicians assess Agni state, dosha involvement, Srotas health and Koshtha type to plan individualised care.

Expert Insight

Dr. Saji

"Ksharsutra is not an alternative to surgery. It is a classical parasurgical procedure with its own evidence base and ICMR recognition. For appropriately selected fistula cases, it preserves sphincter function while achieving tract healing. That is what makes it definitive, not alternative."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can fistula-in-ano really be treated without surgery?

Yes, for appropriately selected cases. Classical Ksharsutra therapy is a well-established parasurgical approach formally recognised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It uses a medicated alkaline thread to cut and heal the fistula tract simultaneously, preserving sphincter function. Not all fistula types are suitable: complex, high trans-sphincteric or branching fistulae require careful assessment.

What is the difference between piles and hemorrhoids?

Piles and hemorrhoids describe the same condition. Both terms refer to swollen vascular cushions in the anal canal. Piles is the term commonly used in India and South Asia. Hemorrhoids is the medical term used in Western medicine. The condition, grading and treatment approach are identical regardless of which term is used.

Can Ayurveda cure chronic gastritis permanently?

KSAC Hospitals does not claim to permanently cure chronic gastritis for every patient. Chronic gastritis has multiple contributing factors. Ayurvedic care addresses Agni dysfunction, dietary triggers and dosha state to reduce episodes and improve digestive function. H. pylori eradication requires appropriate antibiotic therapy where indicated.

Do I need to stop my acidity or IBS medications?

No. Do not stop prescribed medications on your own. Continue PPIs, H2 blockers, laxatives or any prescribed GI medication as directed. Ayurvedic care is planned alongside, and any medication adjustment is discussed between the Ayurvedic physician and your gastroenterologist.

Does KSAC accept insurance for Ksharsutra and GI treatment?

KSAC Hospitals is NABH accredited and empanelled with the State Government of Telangana. We support insurance direct billing where applicable, State Government reimbursement, CGHS, ECHS and dedicated international patient services for outstation and overseas patients seeking Ksharsutra care.
