Doctor-Supervised Care
What Is Ayurvedic Respiratory Care?
Ayurvedic respiratory care addresses conditions of the respiratory system including the nose, sinuses, throat, airways and lungs. Classical Ayurveda describes respiratory conditions under Shwasa Roga (breathing disorders) and Kasa Roga (cough disorders), with detailed sub-classifications that guide treatment selection.
At KSAC Hospitals, an Ayurvedic hospital in Hyderabad, Ayurvedic respiratory care is delivered as a doctor supervised clinical programme. Each patient undergoes detailed history, classical Ayurvedic assessment and review of modern investigations (spirometry, chest X-ray, allergy testing) before any care is planned. This evidence based Ayurveda in Hyderabad approach ensures respiratory care is tailored alongside conventional pulmonology.
Ayurvedic respiratory care at KSAC Hospitals covers three broad areas: chronic obstructive and allergic conditions (asthma, bronchitis, COPD, allergic rhinitis), upper respiratory conditions (sinusitis, recurrent infections) and post-illness respiratory rehabilitation (post-pneumonia, post-COVID, post-TB support).

Root Cause in Ayurveda
Classical Ayurveda describes respiratory conditions as arising primarily from Kapha and Vata dosha involvement in Pranavaha Srotas (the channels carrying prana or vital breath). The seat of Kapha is the chest, making the respiratory system inherently susceptible to Kapha accumulation when Agni (digestive fire) is weakened.
Specific classical frameworks apply. Shwasa Roga describes breathing disorders with five sub-types including Tamaka Shwasa (bronchial asthma). Kasa Roga describes cough disorders with five sub-types based on dosha involvement. Pratishyaya describes nasal and sinus conditions with dosha-specific presentations.
This foundational understanding shapes the Ayurveda treatment in Hyderabad approach at KSAC Hospitals. Rather than only suppressing respiratory symptoms, our senior physicians assess dosha state, Srotas health, Agni function and trigger patterns to plan individualised care.
How Ayurveda Offers Respiratory Care
Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)
Classical shodhana of choice for Kapha-dominant respiratory conditions including bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and chronic productive cough. Requires careful patient selection and physician supervision. Linked with Panchakarma detox therapies.
Nasya (Nasal Administration)
Classical protocol for upper respiratory conditions, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and headache. Medicated oils or preparations administered through nasal passages to clear accumulated Kapha from the sinus and nasal passages.
Shamana and Rasayana
Palliative herbal preparations to manage symptoms, support respiratory function and restore Pranavaha Srotas strength. Rasayana to rebuild respiratory tissue resilience and immune competence.
Breathing Rehabilitation and Lifestyle
Pranayama (classical breathing practices), trigger avoidance, environmental modification, dietary regulation and structured routine building. Integrated with physiotherapy where appropriate.
All treatment plans are decided after consultation and assessment. Outcomes vary from person to person. Ayurvedic respiratory care is supportive, not a replacement for prescribed inhalers or controller therapy.

Expert Insight
"Respiratory care in Ayurveda is not about suppressing symptoms. Vamana clears the accumulated Kapha from its seat. Nasya addresses Pratishyaya at the source. The classical protocols are specific, not general. But they work alongside your pulmonologist, never instead of."

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurvedic treatment cure asthma?
No. KSAC Hospitals does not claim to cure bronchial asthma. Asthma is a chronic condition requiring ongoing management. Ayurvedic asthma care is adjunctive care that works alongside your pulmonologist's prescribed therapy to support respiratory function, reduce trigger sensitivity and improve overall wellness.
Can I stop my inhaler if I start Ayurvedic treatment?
No. Do not stop your prescribed inhaler, controller therapy or steroid inhaler when starting Ayurvedic treatment. Sudden discontinuation of asthma or COPD controller medication can cause dangerous exacerbations. Any medication changes must be guided by your pulmonologist based on clinical assessment.
Can Ayurveda treat active pneumonia?
No. Active pneumonia requires appropriate antibiotic therapy, oxygen supplementation where needed and hospital-based care under the treating physician. KSAC Hospitals offers Ayurvedic support only for post-pneumonia recovery after the acute infection has been treated and resolved.
Can Ayurveda replace TB treatment?
No. Active tuberculosis requires the full standard DOTS regimen under supervision. Ayurvedic support at KSAC Hospitals is only offered after the patient has completed their full course of anti-tuberculosis therapy, for residual respiratory symptoms and recovery support.
Does KSAC accept insurance for respiratory treatment?
KSAC Hospitals is NABH accredited and empanelled with the State Government of Telangana. We support insurance direct billing where applicable, State Government reimbursement, CGHS, ECHS and dedicated international patient services.
